Urgent Eyecare

NHS Appointments Available at Local Optical Practices

Minor Eye Conditions Services [MECS] and Community Urgent Eyecare Service [CUES] are available to patients registered with GP practices based in Dudley, Wolverhampton or Walsall, to provide early and quick assessment of urgent eye problems such as:

  • Sudden change in vision including transient loss
  • Ocular pain
  • Differential diagnosis of red eye
  • Recently occurring flashes and/or floaters
  • Sore or gritty eyes
  • Foreign body in the eye
  • Recent onset double vision

Patients can self-refer or a GP can refer a patient to any of the accredited opticians within the scheme (go to www.primaryeyecare.co.uk and then select ‘find a practice’ to see your nearest option).

Please note however that this is not a walk-in service – patients should always telephone the optometrist practice first. They aim to provide an initial telephone triage within 2-4 hours and according to the urgency of the patient’s symptoms the optometrist will provide diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions and/or will refer the patient as required – to their GP, with advice from the optician, or to a Hospital Eye Clinic with a referral email sent directly from the optometrist.

More information about this scheme can be obtained by downloading the Primary Eyecare document.
